The lbs to kg Conversion Formula
The exact conversion factor, how it was defined, and the fastest ways to use it in your head.
Pounds to Kilograms
The international pound was defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms by the International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1959. This is the exact, legally binding conversion factor used worldwide — it is not a rounded approximation.
Kilograms to Pounds
The reciprocal — 1 ÷ 0.45359237 — gives exactly 2.204622621848776... pounds per kilogram. For practical use, 2.2046 is accurate to within 0.002% for values under 1,000 lbs.
Fast Approximation
lbs ≈ kg × 2.2
For quick mental estimates, dividing pounds by 2.2 gives a result accurate to within ±0.9% for values under 500 lbs. Most lifters use this to quickly re-express their maxes between systems.
The Half-and-Subtract Method
Halve the pounds value, then subtract 10% of the result. Example: 220 lbs → 110 × 0.9 = 99 kg (exact: 99.79 kg). Error under 0.8%. The most reliably accurate mental-math shortcut.
Most strength training programs originating in the US use pounds. Most scientific literature, international competitions, and programs from the UK, Europe, and Australia use kilograms. Being fluent in both systems — and knowing the difference between a 100 kg and a 100 lb squat — is practically useful for any serious lifter.
Pounds vs Kilograms: Which System Do You Need?
The difference between lifting in pounds and kilograms goes beyond a unit — it affects how you read programs, track progress, and compete.
| Context | Pounds (lbs) | Kilograms (kg) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary countries | USA, some gym culture in UK/Australia | Everywhere else, international competitions |
| Scientific literature | Rarely used | Standard unit in all peer-reviewed research |
| Powerlifting meets | Used in USAPL / USA domestic meets | IPF, all international federations |
| Olympic weightlifting | Not used | Always kg — IWF standard |
| Commercial gym equipment | US-made dumbbells, machines | European, Australian, and commercial Olympic sets |
| Programming increments | 5 lb jumps (≈2.27 kg) are standard | 2.5 kg jumps (≈5.5 lbs) are standard |
| BMI & medical use | Not standard | Always kg — WHO standard |
What Are Pounds and Kilograms?
The pound (lb)
The pound is a unit of mass used primarily in the United States customary system and, to a lesser degree, in the imperial system. The word "pound" derives from the Latin libra pondo, meaning "a pound by weight" — which also explains the symbol "lb." The modern international avoirdupois pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms since the International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1959.
The kilogram (kg)
The kilogram is the base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI). Since May 2019, it has been defined in terms of the Planck constant (h = 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ J·s), providing an invariant physical definition independent of any physical object. Before 2019, it was defined by the mass of the International Prototype Kilogram — a platinum-iridium cylinder kept in France. The kilogram is used in every country except the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar for commercial and everyday purposes.
Why two systems exist
The metric system was developed during the French Revolution in the 1790s to create a universal measurement system. Britain adopted it gradually through the 20th century; the United States began transitioning with the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 but never fully completed the switch. As a result, the US remains one of three countries that has not adopted metric as its primary system, creating the persistent need for lbs-to-kg conversion in sports, medicine, and science.
Pounds and kilograms in strength sports
In practice, the difference matters most in competitive strength sports. US-based powerlifters trained in pounds often struggle when competing in international IPF meets denominated in kilograms. A 315 lb deadlift — a common milestone — is 142.88 kg, which doesn't align neatly with the 140/150 kg progressions used in kg-based programming. Knowing exact conversions prevents loading errors and keeps your programming percentages accurate.
